The Gravel Road Civics Project

Small Towns, Big Voices, Real Change

In the quiet gravel roads and wide open prairie skies, something is missing.

Today, some rural and small-town folks feel a gap between their lived experiences and the systems meant to represent them. Decisions are made far away; language feels foreign; voices go unheard.

Over time, this can breeds more than distance—it grows into discontent, disillusionment, and a quiet kind of resignation. Not because people don’t care, but because they have a sense that their voices don’t matter.

The Gravel Road Civics Project seeks to change that.

Our mission is to bring contextually relevant, place-based civics education to rural communities across the Canadian Prairies so that people can regain a sense of agency in our democracy. We meet folks where they’re at—geographically, socially, and emotionally. We connect rural residents with academically grounded tools and knowledge, aiming to deepen understanding and increase participation in democracy.

In places where apathy, resentment, or detachment from the democratic process run high, we see potential.

Through education, connection, and grounded conversation, we help people feel heard, valued, and empowered to shape the systems that shape us.
